Living in Germany during winter can be challenging, especially in the southern part where the temperature can drop to as low as minus 7°C. Eichstätt, Bavaria, experiences unpredictable weather during winter. It can snow, rain or be sunny, despite the harsh cold. Therefore, it’s important to be prepared for any weather condition by dressing warmly.
Last week, the temperature in Eichstätt was almost -6°C, with thick snow covering the streets, making it difficult for people to move around. Many roads were empty, especially in the evenings when residents preferred to stay indoors due to the bad weather condition. The weather this December has been particularly cold, which is unusual compared to previous years. Some experts attributed the change in weather conditions in Southern Germany to climate change.
To survive the cold weather in Germany, it’s important to dress properly before leaving your house. You can wear a tight and a trouser or two trousers to keep warm. You can also wear a polo shirt, a shirt, a sweater, and a thick wind and water-resistant jacket. A winter hat, hand gloves, and boots are also necessary to cover your head, ears, hands, and feet.
It has always been uncomfortable waiting for public bus to commute to work or attend lectures at the university during this period. So, you cannot escape the cold, as you may be compelled by unforeseen circumstance to wait at the bus stop for 10 minutes. This may arise due to delay in bus arrival as a result of the snow that covered the streets, making it difficult for easy movement. Sometimes, the bus schedule may be canceled abruptly because of the snow and you may be forced to wait longer at the bus stop.
Survival tips during winter
Waiting for public transport during winter can be uncomfortable due to delays and cancelations caused by snow. Therefore, it’s important to leave your house early to avoid being late for appointments. It is advisable to prepare adequately before going out. This is necessary in order to mitigate the effects of the cold. I usually prefer to wear a two tick trousers before leaving my home. You can also wear a polo shirt and a shirt, including a sweater and jacket. As for me I prefer to wear a polo, shirt, pullover and a thick jacket that is wind and water resistant. I also put on winter hat to cover my head and ears before venturing out.
Hand gloves and boots
In October and November, I did not bother to wear hand gloves and boots because the cold was not really harsh. However, as we reached first week of December, the weather became worse with thick snow everywhere. It was no longer comfortable going out without covering my hands. Of course, you will feel the pain anytime you venture out without covering your hands. So, it is advisable for you to wear your hand gloves and also boots to be able to walk around without hitches.
Winter can be dark and gloomy, making you feel lonely and depressed. It is important to engage in activities that you enjoy and keep in touch with family and friends. Stay positive and committed to your goals and aspirations.
